KATHMANDU, Jan 3: National Information Commission (NIC) has directed all the political parties to make their financial transactions public  at an interval of three months.

Organizing a press meet at NIC office on Sunday, the commission has asked the political parties to appoint an information officer and be more open about their financial transactions.

The NIC stated that the political parties have been reluctant to divulge their source of income and expenses. The NIC said that as political parties are also covered by the Right to Information Act, 2064, they should be more willing to make their financial transactions public.

Krishna Hari Baskota, chief commissioner of the NIC, said that the political parties should disclose all the donations, gifts and other financial assistance they receive every three months. Although the political parties have been taking donations from entrepreneurs and industrialists, they have been hesitant to disclose the details of their financial transactions. The parties are also obligated to submit the details of their financial transactions to the Election Commission at the end of each fiscal year, failing which they would be liable to pay fines. However, the EC has not enforced that law stringently.
