NHRC urges government to implement UPR commitments

KATHMANDU, Nov 21: National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Friday urged the government to implement the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) commitments without any delays.

According to NHRC, the government is yet to make adequate efforts to ensure human rights despite some commendable initiatives following the Universal Periodic Review (UPR).


UPR is a unique mechanism of the Human Rights Council (HRC) that aims at improving human rights situation in each of the 193 United Nations (UN) member States. Under this mechanism, the human rights situation of all UN Member States is reviewed every four and a half years.

Nepal had made commitments of the immediate implementation of 148 conclusions and suggestions while refusing to implement 18 recommendations during UPR sessions, according to NHRC statement.

Nepal has made commitments to timely present the periodic reporting at HRC, eradicate child marriage and assured amendment to the acts related to child labor. Similarly, the government has also made commitments of ensuring rights to ethnic and marginalized communities, and end social injustices, ensure special rights to victims of natural disaster, bring improvements in prison management, control human trafficking and redefine the domestic violence, among others.
