KATHMANDU, Nov 29: As temperatures drop, egg consumption has naturally increased. At the same time, stricter monitoring along the Indian border has curbed the inflow of illegal eggs, allowing Nepali eggs to fetch better prices. From today, Nepali eggs will be sold at new rates that ensure farmers can recover their production costs, according to the Nepal Layers Poultry Farmers Association (NLPFA).

A meeting of the NLPFA held on Friday discussed the production and market situation of Nepali eggs and fixed a minimum support price effective from today, said Binod Pokharel, president of the NLPFA. Based on farmers’ farm-level production costs, the NLPFA has issued a new price list reflecting a notable increase.

Under the new rates, an extra-large crate (30 eggs) is priced at Rs 560, a large crate at Rs 545, a medium crate at Rs 530, and a small crate at Rs 325.

According to President Pokharel, the price per crate has increased by Rs 40 compared to the previous rate. He said egg prices in India have risen due to ongoing elections, prompting tighter border checks. With illegal imports halted, Nepali eggs are now receiving fair prices. He added that egg consumption typically increases during winter. “As awareness grows that eggs should be consumed in cold weather, demand naturally rises,” Pokharel said.

Egg prices had reached Rs 560 per crate in mid-July but gradually declined afterward. The NLPFA said prices are once again increasing, enabling farmers to recover their production costs.
