KATHMANDU, Feb 17: Nepali student Prakriti Lamsal, who was studying at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) University in Odisha, India, is suspected to have committed suicide due to mental stress.
According to the Indian media, abuser Advik Srivastava was allegedly involved in abetting the suicide. Following Lamsal’s death, an audio clip in which a young man is heard abusing and harassing a girl has gone viral on social media.
In the audio, Lamsal is repeatedly heard crying and expressing her pain, but Srivastava seems indifferent to it.
454 people committed suicide in three years

Lamsal’s friends claim that she was in a relationship with Srivastava for three years, but that she had been constantly suffering from mental and physical torture in the ‘toxic’ relationship.
According to Indian media, Lamsal had expressed her distress to the university administration a month before her suicide. She had reportedly filed a complaint with the International Relations Office (IRO), but the administration had not taken appropriate action. Despite repeatedly requesting support, the university administration ignored her, which further exacerbated her pain.
Bhubaneswar’s Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Pinak Mishra reportedly said that the police have collected the evidence and the investigation is progressing.
“As per the students' demand, we have seized all the evidence. Mobile phones, laptops and other materials have been taken under control so that no evidence is destroyed. The police team has listened to the students and the university administration. Further investigation will be taken forward after the post-mortem report,” Indian media reports quoted DCP Mishra as saying.
