KATHMANDU, Oct 22: Nepal Telecom (NT) has launched GSM mobile service in Taksindu and Jubhu of Solukhumbu district, one of the gateways for the trekkers visiting Mount Everest region.

With the service in place, it now enables the local people and trekkers to use mobile phone and internet data more conveniently.

Previously, the government-owned telecommunication service provider had been offering the service only through Sky Mobile. Taksindu is a popular route among trekkers who hike through Lukla to Namche Bazaar.

The NT has launched the service at a time when there are complaints that the internet service was way too expensive in the main tourist destination. Trekkers have been paying, for one time use, up to US $10 for the internet service offered by the lodges and restaurants.

According to the NT officials, a BTS tower of GSM technology has been set up at an altitude of 3,130 meters in Taksindu of Dudhkund Municipality which is situated at the lap of Numbur Himal. This has helped provide internet service to 4,000 households in the area that includes Deusa, Mukli, Kagel, Panchan and Jubu.
