Nepal sets up final clash with India

KATHMANDU, Sept 14: Nepal defeated the host Sri Lanka 3-0 on Friday in the Second SAFF Women´s Championship and set up a final clash with India.



Sunday´s final would be the second Nepal-India final in the regional tournament. Nepal had lost the final of the first edition 1-0 to India in 2010.

India confirmed their place in the final thrashing hapless Afghanistan 11-0 on Friday.[break]



Nepali girls have been aiming to go one better in the ongoing championship and of putting up superb performance in the tournament. However, Friday´s match against the host was a bit tougher for the Nepali girls.



Nepali girls, who scored 20 goals in the first three matches of the tournament, had to wait until second half on Friday to score the first goal. Nepali Captain Jamuna Gurung missed a penalty kick in the dying minutes of the first half.



However, Anu Lama opened Nepal´s account in the second half. Sajana Rana´s shot rebounded from the pole and Lama utilized it to score the first goal for Nepal. It was the fifth goal for Lama in the ongoing championship.



Deepa Adhikari doubled the lead in the 76th minute. Earlier, Deepa had scored against Pakistan in the group stage match.



Laxmi Paudel sealed the 3-0 victory in the injury time of the match from the penalty kick. Mahishika of Sri Lanka fouled Anu Lama in the danger area and referee awarded spot kick to Nepal. Paudel kept her cool and sealed the match.



Nepal had met Sri Lanka in the Dhaka South Asian Games, 2010 and hammered the Island nation 8-0.
