Nepal crash out of group stage after losing to Australia

Openers Sana Praveen and Sabitri Dhami failed to score in double figures. Captain Pooja Mahato and Seemana KC shared a 15-run partnership for the fourth wicket, but it was not enough to win. Except for Mahato’s 18 runs, no other batter could score in double figures.

KATHMANDU, Jan 22: Nepal crashed out of the U-19 Women's T20 World Cup after losing to Australia by 83 runs in its final league match on Wednesday. Nepal had earlier lost to Bangladesh and Scotland.


Chasing a target of 140 runs set by Australia at the UKM Cricket Oval in Malaysia, Nepal could only score 56 runs at the loss of eight wickets in the stipulated overs.


Openers Sana Praveen and Sabitri Dhami failed to score in double figures. Captain Pooja Mahato and Seemana KC shared a 15-run partnership for the fourth wicket, but it was not enough to win. Except for Mahato’s 18 runs, no other batter could score in double figures.

Earlier, Australia, who had won the toss and elected to bat first, had scored 139 runs at the loss of six wickets in the allotted 20 overs.


After losing three wickets after adding 14 runs, Caoimhe Bray and Leonor La Rosa put on a 72-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Bray was caught by Seemana KC off Riya Sharma for 45 runs. Leonor scored 31 runs, while Hasrat Gill took 30 and Chloe Ainsworth remained not out on 16 runs.


Captain Mahato took three wickets for Nepal. Seemana KC took two wickets and Riya Sharma took one wicket.


Australia won Group D and Bangladesh finished as runners-up and entered the Super Six. Australia have six points and Bangladesh have four points. Scotland, with two points, have also qualified for the Super Six.
