After Malla's death her husband and other relatives left the new born baby at the hospital showing helplessness. Bir Bahadur, Malla's husband, told the hospital staffers that he cannot take the baby with him as he already has five small children: two sons and three daughters.Saroja Ghimire, focal person of Safe Motherhood Program at the district hospital, informed that the District Administration Office (DAO) and District Child Welfare Board (DCWB) are considering taking the custody of the baby fulfilling due procedure. She said that Bir Bahadur has to sign a legal document relinquishing his custodial rights over the baby.
"Such legal procedures are in place to make people think twice before leaving their babies in the lurch," said Ghimire, adding that hospitals cannot take responsibility of all abandoned babies.
She said that the hospital has been planning to send the baby to one of the SOS children's villages through the District Child Welfare Board and the DAO.
Malla, who gave birth to the baby at her home in Libru village, was taken to a nearby area health post at Naatharpu VDC of the district after her bleeding did not stop. Health workers, who kept her three days in the health post hoping that her placenta would come out, referred her to the district headquarter after they could not stop the bleeding.
In lack of trained and qualified manpower and surgery equipment at the district hospital, patients like Malla often end up dying.
