MPs urge road repairs and upgrades ahead of monsoon

KATHMANDU, May 15: Lawmakers have called on the government to complete the repair, upgrading, and construction of roads before the onset of the monsoon.



During zero hour in Tuesday's meeting of the House of Representatives (HoR), Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) lawmaker Bina Lama stressed the need for disaster preparedness. She also urged the government to prevent artificial shortages and price hikes of essential goods, ensure smooth supply, and enforce administrative monitoring.


Likewise, Nepali Congress (NC) MP Bimalendra Nidhi proposed amending the constitutional provision that mandates the national budget be presented on Republic Day (Jestha 15), calling the overlap inappropriate. Similarly, Congress lawmaker Shyam Kumar Ghimire demanded increased budget allocations for irrigation and embankment projects, citing the approaching budget session.

NC MP Shanti BK raised concerns about discrimination and violence in the name of religion in a secular nation. She called on the government and political parties to ensure equal respect for all beliefs.


Similarly, Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) MP Shiva Nepali said citizens' fundamental right to clean drinking water remains unfulfilled. Highlighting the issue of waste mismanagement in Pokhara, he drew attention to the failure of garbage collection vehicles in the Lachu area and the dumping of waste into the Mardi River. He urged concerned authorities including Pokhara Metropolitan City and Nepal Water Supply Corporation to act.


RSP lawmaker Shishir Khanal spoke about the Osaka World Expo 2025 in Japan, where over 160 countries are showcasing their identities and potentials. He noted that the event is expected to attract over 28 million visitors and criticized the government for failing to complete Nepal’s promotional materials for the expo. He emphasized the importance of utilizing the expo to promote Nepali art, culture, tourism and investment.


Meanwhile, CPN (Unified Socialist) MP Sher Bahadur Kunwar stressed the need for appropriate budget allocations to enhance the Muslim community’s access to education, health, and employment opportunities.
