KATHMANDU, April 15: The decomposed body of an 11-year-old girl found in a water tank of a house in Lalitpur has been confirmed as a case of murder committed by her 15-year-old brother. According to police, the incident was driven by both siblings’ drug addiction.

Durga Bohara, from Surma Rural Municipality-4 in Bajhang district, had been missing since March 17 (Chaitra 4). Her mother filed a missing person report on March 19 (Chaitra 6) at the Lalitpur District Police Office. On April 11 (Chaitra 29), her decayed body was discovered in an unused water tank at a rented house in Khapinchhe, Lalitpur-9.

The incident occurred in a house previously occupied by the victim's family until March 11 (Falgun 28). A new tenant moved in on March 15, and later, Sanjay Bogati from Makwanpur moved in on March 29. While attempting to clean the unused cement water tank due to foul odor, he found the body and informed the house owner, who then contacted the police.

CCTV footage from nearby showed Durga and her younger brother entering the house together on March 17, the last day she was seen. Based on this evidence, police arrested the brother from Mangalbazaar on April 14 (Baisakh 1). He confessed to the murder during interrogation.

Argument over a candle after drug use

Police investigations revealed both the brother and sister were drug users. On the day of the incident, they had gone to their old rented room to collect leftover clothes and reportedly consumed drugs there. The boy stated they got into an argument over a candle they had lit for light, which escalated.

He admitted to hitting his sister and strangling her with a nylon rope. The next day, he returned, found the body by the stairs, and hid it inside the tank, covering it with a cement lid.

Durga’s body remained hidden for 25 days before it was discovered in a decomposed state. The Lalitpur District Police Office has initiated legal proceedings against the accused for further judicial action.
