Microhydel plants shut after snow damages canal

BAGLUNG, Feb 19: Two micro hydropower projects have been shut after canal collapsed due to heavy snowfall in the district for the past few days.



With the closure of 22-kilowatt Ghasmar Khola Micro Hydropower Project and 30-kilowatt Inglekhola Micro Hydropower Project, more than 200 households of Ghurja VDC are living in complete darkness since Sunday, informed Jhak Bahaadur Chhatyal, a local. [break]



“The officials of the hydropower projects said power supply will resume after a few days following repair of the canal,” said Chhatyal.



Meanwhile, locals of Kanda VDC in Chitwan district informed that there was heavy snowfall on Sunday. The VDC lies in the northern hilly region of the district. Normal life has been thrown out of gear while the cattle have been confined to the sheds, informed Krishna Bahadur Chepang, a local ,adding, “The snow in the fields and pathways is one foot thick.”



According to Chepang, there has been snowfall in other villages alongside Kanda, which is located at the altitude of 1400-1900 meters. “This is the first time in eight years that the village saw snow,” he said.
