Madhesh Province Lawmaker Singh suspended following his arrest on corruption charges

KATHMANDU, June 13: Saroj Kumar Singh Kushwaha, a lawmaker of the Madhesh Province Assembly, has been suspended after being arrested on corruption charges by the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA).


Singh allegedly misused funds by instructing his personal secretary to withdraw money from consumer committee accounts and deposit it into a private account. Following a warrant issued by the Special Court in Kathmandu, Singh was arrested on Thursday by a CIAA team.

The suspension letter sent by the CIAA was read out in the provincial assembly by Speaker Ram Chandra Mandal on Friday.


Singh, elected from Mahottari Constituency 4(2), represents the Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP) Nepal. According to the CIAA, he formed several consumer committees in his constituency and diverted deposited funds into a private account through his personal secretary, Binod Lal Kayastha, who was arrested in Mahottari a few days ago.


Out of the 107 members in the Madhesh Provincial Assembly, three have now been suspended. Earlier, CPN-UML lawmaker Dipendra Thakur was suspended after being charged with corruption and Loktantrik Samajwadi Party (LSP) lawmaker Abhiram Sharma was suspended after being sentenced to life imprisonment in a murder case.
