GORKHA, Jan 12: It has already been months since the two-year-old daughter of Bishaya Maya Gurung, a local of Gupsipakha in Laprak VDC, Gorkha district fell sick. The family has been living in a makeshift tent and can do little to protect themselves from the biting cold.

Additionally, they also do not have any health post nearby and they are too poor to take Ganga, the sick child, to district headquarters for treatment. Her condition has worsened especially since the snowfall on Friday night.

"My daughter has developed severe rashes all over her body. Had the army team not reached our village, she would not have received any treatment," said Gurung.

A team of doctors from the Nepal Army (NA) led by Drs Bindu Pandey and Naranjan Pudasaini reached the village on Tuesday. However, it was not possible to treat the child right in the village. She had to be airlifted to district headquarters the same day.

"Ganga is receiving primary treatment at the district hospital. We will try to send her to the capital for further treatment," said Bhairavidal Battalion chief Shiva Raj Panta. He informed that the NA team treated over 200 locals on Tuesday.

According to Marsing Gurung, another local, most villagers are falling sick due to the increasing cold. "We have to drink frozen water and there has been no sun for days. The suspect water and living in flimsy tents have made it even more difficult for us," he said.

Dr Pandey informed that most of the sick in the village are suffering from cough, cold and diarrhea. "All the symptoms are related to cold. Children and the elderly have been affected the most."

Locals have expressed a wish for permanent housing, saying that would solve most of their problems.

"We do not have the resources to build our own houses. The government should help us and address our problems at the earliest," said Shanti Gurung, another local.
