NEPALGUNJ, Feb 9: Former prime minister Sushil Koirala's devotion and sincerity was not limited to politics alone. He was equally dedicated toward his family and relatives despite being a life-long bachelor himself.

“No doubt, the country has lost a true guardian and so did we,” said Kiran Koirala, wife of Sushil's brother. “Now we have the responsibility to follow the principles and fulfill the goals that he left behind,” she further said.

Kiran, a former chairperson of Mahila Sangh, Banke, was contesting for the post of the district president of the party during the 13th district convention when the news of the Nepali Congress president's demise broke out. The second round of election was scheduled for Tuesday.

“We were awake till late night due to the preparations for election. We received a phone call at night soon after Sushil 'da' breathed his last,” she said.
According to her, the Nepali Congress president, who was 78, used to be more concerned about the party and the country than his home and family.

But, he equally loved his family members. He was of a kind nature.

“None of his brothers had the trait of sincerity that Sushil 'da' had,” she added.

The former PM's youngest brother Bijay says he can never forget his brother's long struggle and dedication for democracy.

“Sushil 'da' neither accumulated properties nor did he make mansions. He only stood for democracy,” said Bijay. Although he remained proactive in politics, he always remembered his family and relatives, says Bijay.

According to Bijay, the septuagenarian's habit was to abide by his principles, which was the greatest trait about him.

With the demise of Sushil, his two brothers -- Ashok and Bijay -- out of a total of six brothers, are still alive. Ashok is actively involved in the NC politics in Biratnagar while Bijay is living with his family members in Nepalgunj.  The former prime minister had six sisters as well.
