KATHMANDU, Nov 9: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has initiated the installation of high-speed internet services across 71 of its service centers to strengthen its e-governance system.
According to Dhruva Kumar Kafle, chief of KMC’s administration division, the process involves connecting broadband fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) internet to ward offices, health promotion centers, and other service points under the metropolis.
Internet prices likely to go up from mid-July
“Earlier, wards used a 20 Mbps leased line, which was costly. The new connection offers higher capacity at a lower cost,” Kafle said. He added that centers are being equipped with 1 Gbps basic or premium and 500 Mbps internet connections, accessible 24 hours a day, with the service expected to continue until the end of July 2026.
The internet service is being extended to 32 ward offices, 24 health promotion centers, and several key units including Bagdurbar, Teku Transfer Station, Metropolitan Police (East Division), Baggikhana, Buspark, Sohrakhutte, Barun Yantra Office, Balaju, Ramhiti Boudha, Hanumandhoka Conservation Project, Ranipokhari, Basantapur, Balaju Park, and Shankha Park, among others.
KMC has already signed an agreement with Nepal Telecom to provide the service. The deal was signed by KMC Chief Administrative Officer Saroj Guragain and Indal Yadav, Director of Nepal Telecom’s Bagmati Provincial Directorate.
