KATHMANDU, Sept 7: Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balen Shah has expressed his full support for the Gen Z rally scheduled for Monday. He also warned that no political party, leader, or activist should use the protest to serve their own interests.
Shah shared his statement on social media after youths announced street demonstrations against the government’s social media ban. He clarified that the rally is for youth under 28, and due to age restrictions, he himself cannot participate.

“Tomorrow’s rally is clearly spontaneous for Gen Z. They are under 28, for whom I still look old,” Shah wrote. “No party, leader, worker, MP, or activist should turn this spontaneous rally into a tool for their own interests.”
The mayor emphasized his interest in understanding the wishes, objectives, and perspectives of the youth. “I cannot attend due to age restrictions, but it is important to understand their voices. I fully support them,” he said.
Shah also directly addressed the Gen Z participants, asking, “Dear Gen Z, tell me what kind of country you want to see?”
The rally comes as youths across major cities, including Maitighar in Kathmandu, have called for protests in response to the government’s ban on unregistered social media platforms and rising corruption in the country.
