In an interaction with the minister, students put their problems straight forward pointing out the weaknesses of the teachers and the school management.
"The teachers are found somewhere else outside the school during the school hours, which is the main cause of poor results among the government school students," said a student, Milan Chahara.
Minister Pokharel had visited Diktel, the district headquarters of Khotang, to get updates of the education scenario after the devastating earthquake.
There were differing views expressed by teachers, students and parents. “The main problem of this district's education is lack of science teacher, due to which the SLC results were not so satisfactory” Keshav Dahal, Khotang District Education Officer (DEO), said.
A teacher at Early Childhood Development Center, Manakaji Rai, suggested for the increment in salary and benefits for the teachers for effective results.
District representative of the Nepal Teachers' Federation, Dhani Ram Rai, also drew the attention of the education minister to address the needs of the government schools.
“It should be made obligatory for civil servants to send their children to government schools,” he demanded.
Meanwhile, Minister Pokhrel emphasized on teachers' role to improve the quality of education.
"We are not in a position to feel satisfied with our education system. I, as the education minister, will try my best to handle the problem at the grassroots level," said the minister.
