Kailali admin asks people to surrender illegal arms

DHANGADI, March 12: The District Administration Office (DAO), Kailali has asked the people to surrender any unlicensed firearms and ammunition.



In a public notice issued on Monday, DAO has given one month for surrender such arms and ammunition. The notice also said anyone found in possession of illegal arms beyond the deadline will face action as per the Arms and Ammunition Act-1963.[break]



Chief District Officer (CDO) Ram Kumar Thapaliya expressed hope that people in possession of illegal arms will gradually surrender their arms. On Monday, only one firearm was surrendered at the DAO.



If someone is found in possession of such a weapon after the deadline, the individual will be slapped a five-year jail term or fined Rs 100,000, or both, the Ministry of Home Affairs said.



“The public notice was issued to make the district free of illegal arms and to maintain law and order,” said CDO Thapaliya.



Locals said they hope the DAO´s move will help maintain law and order in the district.



Dhim Lal Joshi, a resident of the district, which also borders India, said the administration should also tighten security along the Nepal-India border as small arms are easily available in India and are smuggled to Nepal.
