KATHMANDU, Aug. 24: A meeting on Wednesday of the Judicial Council (JC) has proposed for extending the tenure of the additional judges of the Appellate Courts by two years.

The meeting proposed extending the tenure of the 10 Appellate Court additional judges, considering increasing duties and responsibilities of these courts, said Council Secretary Jeevan Hari Adhikari after the meeting. [break]

They were appointed on September 6, 2010 for a two-year term.

Concluding that the number of cases and work load has increased in the district courts in all the 75 districts as in the past, the present number of district judges is not sufficient as per the increasing work load, the meeting has decided to from a three-member committee to submit a study report on the issue to the Council within the next 45 days.

Senior-most justice at the Supreme Court Tapa Bahadur Magar is the coordinator of the Committee.

Similarly, a five-member taskforce has been formed, keeping in view the increasing pressure of work load because of the lack of sufficient human resources at the Judicial Council Secretariat.

The taskforce formed under the convenorship of Council joint Secretary Krishna Giri has been assigned to submit the study report within the next 45 days, it is learnt.
