ITAHARI, Jan 16: Sub-inspector Jit Bahadur KC, one of the main accused in the Jhumka jailbreak two months ago, has been sent to Biratnager prison after he expressed his reluctance to be remanded in judicial custody at Jhumka jail itself.

Sunsari District Court on Sunday sent accused KC into judicial custody pending further investigations of the jailbreak. [break]The court had first decided to send him to Jhumka jail, where the jailbreak for which he was accused took place.

However, KC had expressed his unwillingness to go to that prison, citing concerns for his personal safety.

According to the jailer at the Eastern Regional Jail at Jhumka, Ganesh Adhikari, after KC hesitated to go to the prison where he used to look after security, he was sent to Biratnagar prison instead, on Tuesday.

A police officer at the district police office informed that KC did not want to be sent to Jhumka jail as he had reportedly treated many of the inmates there badly.

“After KC persistently refused to go to Jhumka jail, we had to seek court approval to send him to another prison,” said the police officer.

After the jailbreak, most of the security personnel and jail staff had accused KC of being the main person behind the incident.

“ KC was found to have helped Chaukidar Ali Asraf Ali in return for small amounts of money he used to receive from Ali,” said the police officer.

According to other inmates at Jhmka jail, KC in collusion with Ali, used to treat other inmates unjustly. So, some of the disgruntled inmates might pose a threat to KC´s personal security. Altogether 19 people accused of helping in the jailbreak, including 18 police personnel, have been released on bail.

On November 9, a dozen inmates, including one Bangladeshi and two Indians, had tunneled a 80-feet long passage to escape from Jhumka jail. Among the fugitive inmates, Bangladeshi national Ali Asaraf, one Ansari and another inmate, Ramesh Yadav, have already been arrested in India.
