Indian national arrested for interrogation in connection with Pokhara balloon burst incident

An Indian national has been arrested for filling a balloon with hydrogen gas during the inauguration ceremony of Pokhara Visit Year 2025.

KATHMANDU, Feb 19: An Indian national has been arrested for filling a balloon with hydrogen gas during the inauguration ceremony of Pokhara Visit Year 2025.


The Ward Police Office Baidam, Kaski, has arrested Kamlesh Kumar, 41, and is conducting necessary investigations against him.

On February 15, a hydrogen gas-filled balloon exploded when Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Paudel and Pokhara Mayor Dhanraj Acharya pressed an electric switch during the balloon release ceremony at the event held at Pokhara Stadium. Police said Kamlesh was arrested on the same day of incident.


Finance Minister Paudel and Mayor Acharya were injured when the hydrogen-filled balloon exploded. Minister Paudel was discharged on Monday after treatment at Kirtipur Burn Hospital, while Mayor Acharya will be under medical supervision for a few more days, doctors said.


Police have already recorded statements from some people believed to be involved in the incident. Police are are preparing to recommend action against him after reviewing the legal provisions related to the process of hydrogen production and filling the balloon


Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak has formed an investigation committee under the coordination of Bharatmani Pandey, Chief District Officer, Kaski regarding the incident.
