“There are a lot of people studying engineering and medicine in Nepal. I also have a lot of brothers who are doing the same. I wanted to try something different, though. Hospitality is a growing field in Nepal, and tourism is one of the most income-generating industries. That’s why I’ve decided to study BHM,” says Bajracharya.[break]
The International School of Management and Technology (ISMT) at Tinkune in Kathmandu is offering international degrees in hospitality from Nepal. Affiliated to Edexcel, one of the renowned rewarding bodies in the UK and accredited by the UK Government’s Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) to award a range of qualifications, the Hospitality BHM and Bachelor in Travel and Tourism Management (BTTM) degrees at ISMT are three-year courses and run on a semester basis.
“This is a very professional course where each semester is evaluated through assignments and written exams,” says Merina Karki, one of the Program Coordinators at ISMT. “We also focus more on practical knowledge and understanding rather than rote learning, and we offer internships and seminars as well.”
Karki further shares that this stream has a wide scope, and those who are in this field have wide opportunities of mobility when it comes to the places they work at and the positions they occupy.
Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Punjab in India is making a name for itself in this sector. The college offers five different degrees in Hotel Management and Tourism streams. The university has a state-of-the-art infrastructure, and a college environment that ensures that students are not grilled too much with academics, says a representative from LPU. “Also, for a university, the prices are reasonable,” she adds.
Another international college offering hospitality courses is Vistula University in Poland. Founded in 1992, this college hosts students from over 40 countries and offers degrees in Tourism and Recreation.
“This is generally a course that’s expensive in comparison to other streams. But at Vistula University, one can get affordable prices,” says BK Shrestha, the Nepali representative for the University. “The University is internationally renowned and offers placements in international hospitality chains,” he adds.
With a handful of brochures and fliers in his hand, Roshan Salhaita is found consulting various consultancies and college booths at the Fair.
“I’ve always been interested in the hotel industry and that’s what I studied during my high school. I’m now looking for colleges offering Bachelor’s program in Hotel Management. I think I can make a name in this industry in the future,” he says.
With increasing interest of students in the hospitality and tourism sector, many colleges, both Nepali and international, are striving to provide students the kind of education they are looking for – one which is practical and based on hands-on training.
