KATHMANDU, Jan 23: UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal said on Monday that he does not harbor an ambition to become a directly elected president of the country as he has already been fulfilling a president-like role.

Addressing a program in the capital, he also urged other parliamentary parties including the Nepali Congress and the CPN-UML not to fear their proposal of directly elected president. [break]

"I was more powerful than a president before the election of the Constituent Assembly. People love me as if I am a president. Nowadays, I am neither president nor prime minister. But I do feel that I am no less powerful than a president," he said.

He also said that he is not certain whether he would run for president in the upcoming election after the promulgation of the new constitution.

He argued that the allegations of parliamentary parties that his party wants a directly elected president to impose autocracy and establish a communist rule is unfounded one.
