HANSAPUR (Gorkha), May 26: One month has elapsed since the April 25 earthquake, but quake victims, whose houses were destroyed in the quake in Gorkha district, have yet to receive Rs 15,000 that the government had pledged to provide to each such family.

The quake-hit locals have been living in temporary shelters for the last one month. Even the engineers have not reached the remote villages in the district to inspect quake-hit houses.

As the government failed to rehabilitate the displaced locals, they are now repairing their damaged houses on their own.Despite persistent aftershocks, the locals are forced to return to their damaged houses. Their return to damaged houses has put their lives at risk. They have already lost hope of the government's relief fund for purchasing corrugated sheets.

"Now we cannot afford to rebuild a new house," said one of the victims, Mayanath Adhikari, of Hansapur VDC-3. He and his wife were fixing the roof of his stone house. They had a two-story house. The ground floor of the house collapsed in the quake.

After their tent was blown away in the recent storm, Adhikari family did not have any choice other than moving back to their damaged house, according to Mayanath.

Another local, Yam Bahadur Gurung, of Swanra VDC-9 tried his best to find engineers to inspect his house, which has developed several cracks after the quake, but in vain. At last, he has been forced to live in the same house.

"We have frequently been informed that engineers would visit our houses. No one has come to our place for inspection," said Gurung.

With the onset of monsoon, local quake victims have started repairing their houses on their own. They are now using wood, stones, corrugated sheets and straw to build roof for their houses.

A dozen villages, including Barpak and neighboring areas, which are not easily accessible by road, are the hardest hit. Due to lack of transport services, the locals have not been able to transport construction materials to the affected areas.

Meanwhile, assistant chief district officer (CDO), Dipendra Paudel, told Republica that District Disaster Relief Committee (DDRC) is now planning to distribute a relief fund Rs 15,000 to each affected family.

"We'll distribute the government relief to the affected families in one or two days," said Poudel.

As per the report, 4,800 houses in the district were destroyed in the earthquake.
