KATHMANDU, June 25: The government has been accused of being apathetic towards saving the life of Amar Bahadur Bam who is facing the death penalty in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Taking part in an interaction program organized by the Save Amar Campaign here today, the participants expressed concern over the apathy on the part of the government to save Amar. [break]

They complained that the government has not gone through the diplomatic channel to save Amar. Minister for Land Reform and Management Chandra Dev Joshi said though the issue was raised in the Cabinet, no initiative have been taken yet to save Amar.

According to information provided at the program, the Nepali Embassy in Dubai came to know about Amar’s case only after three years of the announcement of Dubai Court verdict while the government was aware of the case only after seven years.

Also speaking at the programme, Non-Resident Nepalese Association General Secretary Tenji Sherpa vowed to do his best to save Amar.

Newly married Amar of Dhari VDC in Darchula had reached the UAE in connection with employment and was arrested on the charge of murdering one Indian national on January 25, 2003. Now, he is 34-years-old.

It is learnt that Amar could not put his statement before the court since he had no knowledge about the language of Dubai. Other people involved in the crime later (after the declaration of the court decision) furnished a written statement before the court citing that Amar was innocent.

In a tragic development, following the news about her son, Amar’s mother had died of heart-attack. His spouse is in a great distress since then.
