Govt, MMT ink 4-point pact

KATHMANDU, March 21: Government and an armed group in Tarai, Madhesi Mukti Tigers, signed a four-point agreement in the capital, Friday, FM stations reported.



As per the agreement, the MMT has pledged to renounce violence and illegal activities. The government, as a reciprocal gesture, has promised to provide security to MMT talks team member as well as treat the group as a political outfit during the period of the talks.



Minister for Peace and Reconstruction Janardan Sharma and Bhola Prasad Mukhiya, coordinator of MMT talks team, signed the agreement on behalf of the government and the armed outfit, respectively.



In recent past, the government has inked agreements with smaller armed groups active in the Tarai.



Most of these smaller groups have demanded that Madhes be declared an autonomous province, besides demanding freeing up of their jailed cadres and leaders.
