KATHMANDU, Feb 10: A preparatory meeting for the upcoming Sagarmatha Sambad was held on Monday at the Prime Minister’s residence, Baluwatar, in the presence of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. The dialogue is scheduled to take place in Kathmandu from May 16 -18.

The meeting proposed the formation of a steering committee under the leadership of PM Oli to oversee the dialogue. Additionally, discussions were held on establishing an executive committee, coordinated by Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Arzu Rana Deuba, along with a secretariat to facilitate the event's organization.

A proposal was made to set up a secretariat within the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers to coordinate the dialogue. Invitations are being extended to heads of state or government from neighboring countries India, China, and South Asian nations as special guests. Efforts are also underway to promote the event through national and international media, with the official website SagarmathaSambad.com launching on Monday.

To ensure broader participation, a pre-event has been proposed, involving women, children, senior citizens, youth, indigenous communities, and marginalized groups. Additionally, sideline events and exhibitions will be organized in collaboration with the Nepal Tourism Board, the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), and the private sector to promote Nepal’s tourism.

As part of the International Year of Glaciers 2025, Prime Minister Oli had earlier announced the Sagarmatha Sambad as a biennial global dialogue focusing on climate change, mountains, and the future of human life. This will be the first edition of the international event.

Minister for Forest and Environment Ain Bahadur Shahi Thakuri, Economic and Development Advisor to the Prime Minister Dr Yubaraj Khatiwada, and other officials attended the meeting on Monday.
