Alleging discrimination in promotion process, factory workers had launched the protest, bringing production process to a standstill.
Iswor Pariyar, president of GRF Workers Union, said the workers returned to work after the management made written commitment to fulfill the demands that among others include adopting fair and transparent promotion process.
“We withdrew our agitation after the management made written commitment to fulfill our demands within 15 days. If the management failed to address our demands by then, we will resume our agitation,” added Pariyar.
Factory workers had launched protest after the management promoted nine staff last month, overlooking other deserving staff, who, according to them, were senior and more capable.
Dinesh Kumar Bartaula, general manager of the factory, said problem arose after the workers pushed for promotion of 50 staff. He said the factory had nine quotas for promotion in this fiscal year.
“We will try to resolve the problem by correcting mistakes that might have been committed during promotion of workers,” said Bartaula.
Gorakhkali Rubber Factory, which employs 338 staff, suffers loss of at least Rs 500,000 a day if its operation is disrupted. The factory, which was earlier closed for two weeks, had reported loss of around seven million rupees. It has the capacity of producing 25,000 big and 15,000 small tires annually.
The ailing state-owned factory has not been able to hold its board meeting after the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Industry appointed their respective joint secretaries at the helm of the factory.
