The locals, who had formed a Save Gorakhkali Rubber Factory Committee, had padlocked the factory since June 14, charging management of recruiting workers from outside, defying the earlier agreement. [break]They had staged sit-in protest against the management after it decided to locally recruit six employees in Banepa and Dhangadi depots.
"We withdrew our strike after the management agreed to address our demands within 21 days," said Jit Bahadur Bhatta, president of the committee.
Under the understanding, the management has agreed to prioritize the locals while recruiting staff.
"Although we have agreed to allow the management to resume operation, we will continue with our protest unless the management annuls recruitment decision," said Bhatta.
“We have agreed to address the demand of locals within 21 days after holding a board meeting,” said Dinesh Kumar Bartaula, managing director of the factory. He said it was important to resolve the conflict within the board before addressing the locals´ demand.
The factory management has not been able to hold its board meeting after the finance ministry and industry ministry appointed separate chairman.
The factory incurred loss of above Rs 7 million during the period of closure. The factory has the capacity of producing 25,000 big and 15,000 small tires annually.
