KATHMANDU, June 27: A two-day national gathering of former Madhesi People´s Rights Forum-Democratic (MPRF-D) leaders and cadres began at Rastriya Sabha Griha in the capital on Wednesday.

The gathering of around 3,000 leaders and cadres from 25 districts will announce formation of National Madhes Socialist Party (NMSP) amid a press conference on Thursday. [break]

According to sources, another name National Madhes Democratic party (NMDP) was proposed in the gathering. The gathering also endorsed the party statute and flag.

The statute says the party chairman can hold the post only for two terms. According to the statute, the party will be run under collective leadership. According to the statute, chairmen of sister wings, districts and municipal committees will be members of central working committee (CWC) of the party.

Addressing the gathering, Sharat Singh Bhandari, who will lead the new party, termed the event as a milestone in their efforts to secure the rights of indigenous, ethnic, Madhesi, Muslim and Dalit communities and other marginalized groups.

"Our aim is to ensure identity and rights of the marginalized groups," Bhandari said, adding that the struggle for representation of all marginalized and disadvantaged communities at all levels of state mechanism has begun.

During his half-an-hour speech, Bhandari held MPRF-D Chairman Bijay Kumar Gachchhadar responsible for the dissolution of the Constituent Assembly (CA).

He also accused the ruling United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) of supporting the Maoists in their plan to capture state powers. Bhandari termed the CPN-UML as the most “intolerant and rigid political party”.

He also attributed “old, unclear and abstract concept” of the Nepali Congress to the dissolution of the CA.

Addressing the inaugural session, political analysts CK Lal, Tulanarayan Sah, Maithili writer Dheerendra Premarshi and indigenous leader Surendra Chaudhari, among others, had stressed on the need for raising the Madhesi agendas more strongly.

Participants at the gathering were from all communities, including Pahadi, Madhesi, indigenous, Muslim and Dalit.

MPRF-D had expelled Bhandari among other influential central committee members last month accusing them of involvement in activities against the party´s policy and discipline.
