These are few lines posted by a Jhapa-based college boy who announced his imminent suicide on Facebook wall, which was noted by Facebook Security Department, Ireland and issued an alert to Nepal Police after reading the threat. The youth had updated his post on the social networking site at about 1:30 pm Thursday and an alert was emailed to the Cyber Crime Pillar of Metropolitan Police Crime Division, Teku.
Responding to the alarm raised by the Facebook Security Department, which tracked the 'suicidal content/threat' with support from technical intelligence, a police squad led by Inspector Pashupati Kumar Raya was immediately deployed to investigate the case.
"We regret to inform about the 'suicidal content' posted on facebook....make sure he doesn't harm himself," read the email received by the Nepal Police.
Upon receiving such a strange email by the Crime Division from the Facebook Security Department for the first time, the police investigated the profile of the youth and was able to track him. He was found locked inside for hours in his own residence.
Police first called him in his mobile number but there was no response. As there were no Facebook activities as well after the 'suicidal post', the police first thought he had already committed suicide.
But with support from District Police Office, Jhapa, the investigators were able to contact him at 12:48 am when he was crying aloud.
"He expressed frustration about the society, his family members and recalled about why he wanted to die after receiving the call," Inspector Raya said, adding, "When the police tried to sneak into the house for the rescue, he urged not to let in his family members."
Responding to his request, the police did not enter his house but provided necessary counseling.
"After he assured not to commit suicide, we didn't intervene for privacy reasons," Inspector Raya said. The youth in return thanked Facebook and the police for changing his mind. He has also pledged not to repeat such irresponsible act again and requested for his privacy.
The police also said that they were further investigating why he wanted to commit suicide and take necessary action if needed. Keeping in view of such a strange incident, the police have also alerted the guardians to take care of the activities of their children.
The Crime Division alone has received about 435 complaints related to Facebook in the current fiscal year 2072/073 and 36 cases were charge sheeted.
