DHANGADHI, Aug 31 : Senior orthopedic surgeon and medical education reform activist Dr Govinda KC has launched a three-day satyagraha at Geta Medical College in Dhangadhi, protesting the government’s recent decisions regarding medical education.

Announcing his campaign during a press conference on Saturday, Dr KC said the government’s move to increase seats in private medical colleges would only benefit political leaders and medical mafias while deteriorating the quality of education. “When the quality of education declines, health services suffer. That means playing with the health of ordinary Nepalis,” he said.

Dr KC accused the government and the Medical Education Commission of implementing policies that undermine the health and education system rather than serving the interests of students and the public. He argued that Nepal still lacks adequate government medical colleges and hospitals, but instead of expanding them, the government is favoring private institutions.

Citing an example, Dr KC said, “While the Institute of Medicine hesitates to admit 100 students, private colleges lacking sufficient infrastructure and patient flow are being allowed to enroll 130 students. This is unfortunate.”

As part of his satyagraha, Dr KC put forward several demands. These include revoking the decision to increase seats in private medical colleges, establishing government medical colleges and hospitals in Ilam, Udaypur and Dadeldhura and immediately operating the teaching hospital and academic programs at the Geta Medical College.

He also called for the implementation of previous agreements, including the enactment of the Integrated Institute Act and the Higher Education Act, and the enforcement of provisions on non-profit medical education and staff quotas.
