"Almost all other issues have been getting proper space in media but the issues of differently-abled people are not getting properly addressed by the media," complained Bhoj Raj Shrestha, who reached Republica's office at Bag Durbar, Kathmandu on Wednesday along with a group of differently-abled people, on a campaign 'Asia try-2016'. The campaign is an international movement of the differently-abled people aimed at sensitizing their problems.Differently-abled people from nine countries - Japan, India, Cambodia, Taiwan, South Korea, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal and Bhutan have been participating in the campaign throughout the continent.
"We are compelled to live with humiliation. Despite having money in our pockets, we cannot eat as we cannot enter into hotels," complained Shrestha, adding that disabled people are having hard time to enjoy the service of public vehicles because of unfriendly policies. He asked the concerned authorities to make public infrastructures like schools, colleges, hotels, roads, footpaths and toilets disabled friendly.
Shrestha urged the media to give proper space to the issues of differently-abled people. He complained that the capacity of differently-abled people has not been properly recognized. According to Shrestha, they feel that they are being ignored.
Speaking to the delegation of the campaign, Guna Raj Luitel, editor in-chief of Nagarik daily, the sister publication of Republica, said that the publication will not undermine the issues of the differently-abled people. He wished for the success of the campaign.
The four-day campaign will be organized in Kathmandu and Pokhara.
