KATHMANDU, July 15: Microsoft Innovation Center (MIC) Nepal in partnership with UNICEF Nepal organized a three-day appathon from July 10 to 12 with the motive to identify wearable technological solutions focusing in areas like health, education, HIV/AIDS, and social inclusion, among others.

The program held in Dhulikhel Lodge Resort saw the participation of 103 young developers, programmers, designers and technical experts who presented a prototype of their innovative technology that could be worn.Team naviTech won the first place with their technological solution on enhancing navigation system by creating haptic (touch) sensation in the shoes. The shoes will be maneuvered via a mobile phone app. Using data from Google maps, it allegedly creates a sensation while one takes turns when s/he is walking, riding and trekking. The team consisted of Krishna Rijal and Dipesh Pandey.

The team that secured second place was Team TechManiac who presented a solution for energy creation. The four-member team of Pratima Neupane, Bibash Adhikari, Nikhil Dwa and Sushil Ghimire offered a solution to convert the force provided by our legs while running or walking into electrical energy and store it in a rechargeable battery for further use.

Team EDGE comprising of Shankhar Bhattarai, Bhagy Narayan Kumar Sah, Sukriti Mahaju, and Sadhana Khadka made it to the third place. Their solution was "Smart Gloves" targeted particularly for physically challenged individuals. When worn by these individuals, the gloves will display and disseminate the intended message to the caretakers, nurses and related people nearby. The censors can be customized to mean different things. For example, if a paralyzed person has the ability to move one of his fingers, the movement could be used to indicate that he wants to go to toilet. In case no one responds to the message sent, a siren will start buzzing to alert anyone nearby.

Team naviTech, Team TechManiac, and Team EDGE won cash prize of Rs 150,000, 100,000 and 50,000 respectively.
