Denmark to close embassy by 2017-end

KATHMANDU, June 25:Denmark has decided to phase out the Danish development support to Nepal and to close the Embassy by the end of 2017.

KATHMANDU, June 24: Denmark has decided to close the embassy in Kathmandu by the end of 2017 and phase out its development support.



In a program organized to mark 25 years of Denmark in Nepal, Danish ambassador to Nepal Kirsten Geelan said, “For 25 years Denmark's cooperation with Nepal has focused on bettering people´s everyday life; from dairy farming, education, human rights, renewable energy and environment, forest management and economic growth.”

It is my firm belief that even though the Danish Embassy will close in the future, she said, adding that the strong diplomatic relations between Nepal and Denmark will remain and continue developing.


Highlighting the progress made by Nepal in the past 25 years, she said that Nepal has developed significantly since cooperation started between the two countries 25 years ago.


“We have witnessed positive democratic changes and with the new constitution adopted last year, Nepal reached a milestone,” she said. “It is my sincere hope that Nepal will continue to build stronger and accountable institutions to the benefit of the people.”


Every year thousands of Danish tourists visit Nepal to experience the unique and beautiful culture and nature, she said. “Often strong friendships are formed and many Danes come back year after year.”
