“I had sold around 1,700 to 1,800 bottles last year but I have already sold about 2,200 bottles so far this year,” said Mohan Lama, proprietor of Ylang Ylang at Bishalbazar that sells branded perfumes. “The market of perfume is getting better as local people are becoming more brand conscious.”[break]
Chanel, Bvlgari, Boss, Nautica, Versace, CK, Aigner, Burberry, Revealed, Guess, Escada, Gucci and Police are amongst the forest of luxury perfumes available in the local market. They are available in variety of scents like sandalwood, jasmine, and floral scents, as plants are the main source of oil and aroma compounds. These perfumes are mostly imported from the US, the UK, France and Italy among others.
The price of branded perfumes starts from Rs 2,200 to Rs 12,000, depending on the brand, concentration of alcohol and net volume.

In the local market, 75ml pack of Police costs Rs 2,200, Chanel (100 ml to 150ml) is available in range of Rs 10,000 to Rs 12,000. Similarly, 90ml pack of Revealed costs Rs 2,500, 100ml is priced at Rs 6,500 and 75ml pack of Nautica and CK costs Rs 3,200 and Rs 4,500 respectively. 75ml pack of Aigner costs Rs 5,600 and 100ml pack of Burberry costs Rs 8,000 respectively, while 90ml packs of Guess, Gucci and Escada are available at Rs 4,500, Rs 5,000 and Rs 3,500 respectively.
Sita Shrestha, sales executive of Pleasure Fragrance at City Centre, said they have impressive collection of different brands of perfume as people´s taste for perfume varies greatly - some prefer light smell while some go for strong smell.
Biswas Lama, sales executive of Gorgeous at Civil Mall, suggested consumers to check the date and ingredients of the fragrance before buying it as some ingredients may be allergic depending on the skin type.
Traders say people buy perform not just for their personal use but also for gifting purpose. People gift perfumes to their near and dear ones during special occasions like birthday, Valentine´s Day, New Year´s Day and weddings, they said.
