They concede that sending seriously injured patients out of hospital is full of risks, but said they have no other option. Apart from diagnosis of ailments, doctors send patients for scans to assess the success of treatment. [break]
The department said that it has already informed the hospital administration about the problem. "We have informed the administration which has already called the supplier to repair the machine," Dr Swyam Prakash Pandit, chief of the department, said. He said that the supplier also has to order parts from Japan as the machine was manufactured by a Japanese company.
Dr Pandit concedes that the patients have been suffering a lot due to lack of service in the hospital. "They have to pay more than double the price at private centers for CT-scan," he said. To recover their huge investment, private centers charge patients exorbitantly compared to what they have to pay at Bir Hospital. He concedes that the hospital has been sending serious patients out of hospital after the service come to a halt.
Patients from across the country come to Bir Hospital in the hopes of getting better services at reasonable cost. The hospital provides all kinds of medical services, including the CT-scan service, at a subsidized rate. It provides free services to poor patients.
Meanwhile, resident doctors perusing higher degree at hospital under the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS) on Monday submitted memorandum to the Vice Chancellor (VC) and Registrar demanding new CT-scan machine immediately. They said that they have been deprived of study due to lack of service in the hospital. "We have demanded the NAMS to update the equipments," said Dr Dinesh Maharjan, a resident doctor. He said that the existing radiology machine of the hospital is too old and is outdated.
