Condolence meeting held in memory of cornea donors

KATHMANDU, Jan 25: In a bid to pay homage to cornea donors, a mass condolence ceremony was organized on Saturday. Every year, the Eye Bank organizes mass condolence ceremony to honor the cornea donors in the presence of their family members. "To encourage the people to donate corneas after their death, express gratitude towards the donors, know the experiences of the people, who got corneas and paying homage to the deceased donors are the main objectives of this mass condolence ceremony," said Dr Rita Gurung, chief executive officer of Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology.

Thousands of visually-impaired people are in queue for cornea to be able to see the world. The cornea collection and transplantation services of the bank have proven to be a boon for visually impaired people.


According to the eye bank, over 63,000 people have agreed to donate their corneas after their deaths, whereas over 11,000 have already received corneas. The eye bank said that the number of people willing to donate their corneas have risen twofold in recent time.
