"We have decided to give them a chance to compete in other lower positions if they want to. They will still have the option to opt for voluntary retirement if they do not want to compete in the non-officer positions," said Special Committee member Minendra Rijal.

Of the total 75 former Maoist combatants opting for officer level positions in the NA, 71 combatants had passed the selection test conducted by the NA. The remaining 1,388 Maoist combatants have already been selected for the non-officer level positions in the NA.

Special Committee members are also visiting Chitwan-based Army Academy, where the former combatants choosing for officer level positions went through selection process, on Friday to get first hand information about the problems seen in the selection process.

An NA helicopter will take the members who are available in Kathmandu to Chitwan.

During Thursday´s meeting, officials from the Ministry of Peace and Reconstruction had submitted details of expenditures made in the Maoist cantonments over the years.

"We have taken that as a reference material. We will take decision on the issue in our next meeting," Rijal further said. "This is the issue we have been raising since long."
