KATHMANDU, Sept 27: Kathmandu Metropolitan City's (KMC) initiative to clear the city's garbage with the help of a new app is gaining momentum. The KMC office has received over 100 complains since the Clean KTM app came into operation in April.

The app, which has been downloaded more than 500 times, was launched nearly 6 months ago when Nepal celebrated 100 weeks of Bagmati Cleanup Campaign on April 11.According to Rabin Man Shrestha, chief of the Environment Management Division (EMD) at the KMC, the concept of Clean KTM app is becoming popular day by day.

"The complaints are getting registered from various parts of Kathmandu and our workforce is clearing up the garbage within 24 hours of time. This app has multiplied our work and on the other hand people are getting aware of garbage management," said Shrestha.

Anyone with android mobile can download the app from Google PlayStore. Once downloaded, the service seekers need to upload the garbage's picture and make it clear where the picture was taken. It is necessary to mention whether the waste is degradable or non-degradable.

"When the complaints with pictures are sent through the app, the message will get registered directly to my computer. Currently, I am the only one authorized to access the list of complaints. We are now in the process of training and including more of my staff in this genuine work of cleaning Kathmandu," said Shrestha.

Shrestha further revealed that most of the complaints are coming from Gairidhara, Kalimati and Lagankhel areas. He assured all the complaints have been addressed within 24 hours of registration.

"This must be the best example of how mobile technology is helping clean Kathmandu. We request people to make the best use of this app and support our cleaning campaign," said Shrestha.

He further shared that the KMC is also working to include SMS system in spreading messages of cleaning Kathmandu.
