The CIAA has asked the court to recoup a hefty Rs 26.3 million from Bhurtel.Similarly, the anti-graft body has sought maximum punishment for the accused and also demanded the confiscation of assets the sources for which could not be shown.
In the chargesheet filed at the court, the CIAA stated that Bhurtel, during his tenure at Bharatpur Hospital, embezzled a huge amount of money by allowing contractors to use sub-standard materials for hospital building constructions as well as procuring various low-quality medical equipment for the hospital.
Similarly, the anti-graft body accused Dr Bhurtel of improperly giving out the hospital's lands out on lease to a third party and amassing a huge amount of property illegally, to the detriment of the hospital.
"The CIAA also accused Bhurtel of illegally collecting money from patients at Kalika Hospital, in which he has a share," reads the statement issued by the CIAA.
The CIAA has stated that Bhurtel purchased two bungalows in Bharatpur-11 and Kalanki, Kathmandu, owns a Rs 6.7 million share in Chitwan Medical College, and has also illegally amassed numerous other properties disproportionate to his known sources of income.
According to the CIAA, Bhurtel's wife Rukmani has been named defendant in the case.
Lately, the CIAA has stepped up investigations and filing of cases at the Special Court against various incumbent and retired officials, on charges of misuse of authority and accumulation of wealth disproportionate to their known sources of income.
In the past one month alone, the CIAA has filed graft cases against Chairman of B P Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital (BPKMCH) Dr Bhaktaman Shrestha, former assistant manager of Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) Dhurba Kumar Uprety, and Suresh Singh, an employee at Sagarmatha Forest Development Project Office, accusing them of amassing property disproportionate to their known sources of income through misuse of authority.
