BIRGUNJ, Nov 12: A total of 1,697 cases related to extortionate money lending have been settled through mediation in Parsa district, according to the District Police Office.
Spokesperson Hari Bahadur Basnet said that 2,367 cases of usury were registered in the district, of which 635 are still pending.

However, Shambhu Prasad Yadav, Secretary of the Farmers’ Struggle Committee against Usury, said the practice of exploiting people through forged loan documents and exorbitant interest rates has not yet been eliminated. “Many genuine victims of usury are still awaiting justice,” he added.
Kanaiya Prasad Yadav from Pokhariya Municipality claimed that a local influential person, Jogindar Raut Kurmi, forced him to sign a document for a loan of Rs 330,000, even though he had only borrowed Rs 110,000. “The government must take stringent action to curb such exploitation,” he demanded.
According to police, mediation efforts have so far resulted in the recovery of Rs 291 million in cash and over 40 bighas of land from illegal money-lending practices in the district, spokesperson Basnet said.
