KATHMANDU, Dec 27: CPN-UML General Secretary Shankar Pokhrel has said that there was a deliberate attempt to portray party chairman KP Sharma Oli as responsible for the incidents that occurred on September 8 and 9.
Addressing the opening ceremony of the party’s 11th General Convention at the Sallaghari open ground in Bhaktapur, Pokhrel criticised what he described as a targeted propaganda campaign against Oli. “The kind of propaganda carried out against KP Sharma Oli was, in effect, an attempt to portray our party chairman as responsible for the incidents of September 8 and 9,” he said.

Pokhrel further claimed that efforts were made to weaken democracy in Nepal by exploiting the sentiments of Gen Z. He described the incidents of Bhadra 23 and 24 as anti-democratic and anti-republic activities.
He said the UML went ahead with its general convention at a time when attempts were being made to spread fear, panic and push the country towards regression. The large turnout at the convention’s opening, he added, served as a strong response to critics.
Pokhrel also said the general convention would elect a leadership capable of effectively implementing the party’s policies. Expressing confidence in the party’s future, he asserted that the UML is not weak and will emerge even stronger.
