KATHMANDU, Feb 5: For the first time in history, Nepal's army chief is all set to return home from an official visit to neighboring India in the national army's own flight.

Chief of Army Staff (CoAS) General Rajendra Chhetri is scheduled to return home on Tuesday from Lucknow, where the Central Command of the Indian Army is located. As per the plan, CoAS Chhetri-led delegation will visit the Central Command, which is one of the seven operational commands of the Indian army.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation of India (DGCA) has given its go-ahead to Nepal's national army's aviation authorities to fly on its territory as per the proposals of the Nepal Army. "It's a new practice and a matter of pride to use the national army's own aircraft to fly to and from other countries," said Nepal Army Spokesperson Brigadier General Tara Bahadur Karki, confirming the use of national army's own flight.

"Our proposal to fly in our own aircraft to India has been approved by concerned Indian authorities," he said. In the past, chiefs of Nepal Army used to fly back to New Delhi from Lucknow-based Central Command to take a flight back home.

General Chhetri on Wednesday was conferred the honorary rank of general of the Indian Army by Indian President Pranab Mukharjee during an investiture ceremony at Rastrapati Bhawan for his "commendable military prowess and immeasurable contribution to fostering Nepal's long and friendly association with India".

CoAS Chhetri is currently in India on the invitation of his Indian counterpart Genral Dalbir Singh. According to the Nepal Army's Directorate of Public Relations (DPR), CoAS Chhetri on Thursday visited Indian Army's War College as well as artillery and infantry schools in Madhya Pradesh. High-ranking officers of Nepal Army have been participating in different trainings in the War College.
