APF, Police, New Diamond maintain winning streak

KATHMANDU: Host Armed Police Force (APF), Nepal Police and New Diamond Academy clinched second victory in a row on Thursday in the APF IGP First National Open Women´s Volleyball Tournament at the covered hall of National Sports Council, Tripureshwar, Kathmandu.



 APF edged past Far-western Region in straight sets 25-7, 25-10, 25-7. APF´s Nebica Chaudhary was declared player-of-the-match. [break]



Meanwhile, Police registered a comfortable 25-3, 25-15 25-9 victory over Mid Western Region to inflict the latter second defeat in as many matches played. Neeta Shah of the departmental giant won the player-of-the-match award. In another match, New Diamond crushed Eastern Region 25-9, 25-4, 25-3 for a second defeat in a row. New Diamond´s Kripa Adhikari was adjudged player-of-the-match.



Nepal meets Turkmenistan Friday



KATHMANDU: Nepal will kick start its campaign locking horns with Turkmenistan on Friday in the group A qualifiers of AFC U-19 Championship to be held at the Al Arabia Stadium in Dhola, Qatar. Raju Shakya and Kishor KC are the coaches of the Nepali team captained by Sulav Maskey.



The winner of the five team group including Nepal, Turkmenistan, India, Qatar and Uzbekistan will confirm ticket for the finals. The Nepali youth team will face India on October 6, Uzbekistan on October 8 and host Qatar two days later. The winners of nine groups and the six best runners-up will join host Myanmar in the finals of the competition scheduled for October 2014.





U-16 football team awarded



KATHMANDU: All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) on Thursday awarded the U-16 national football team with Rs 25,000 each. The Nepali team had qualified for the final rounds of AFC U-16 Championship as the winner of group C on Sunday at the Dasharath Stadium, Tripureshwar.



All 23 members of the Nepali team, including three coaches -- head coach Bal Gopal Maharjan and coaches Sunil Shrestha and Mrigendra Mishra --, were given the amount. Nepal had defeated Bahrain 2-0, Turkmenistan 4-0 and played 2-2 draw with Iraq in the four team group to advance into the finals to be held next year in Thailand. Earlier, Nepal had secured final berth of the tournament in 2000 and 2006 respectively.
