TAPLEJUNG, May 8: At least six people have been killed and 12 injured when a pickup van plunged 200 meters down the road in Lyangba in Taplejung district on Thursday.
The deceased have been identified as Sagar Limbu,19, of Thechambu VDC-9, Nirmala Guragain (Baral), 28, and Tika Sunuwar, 30, of Taplejung Municipality-8, Bhim Maya Katuwal, 62, of Sawadin VDC-9, Sharan Limbu, 31, of Dumrise-1 and Ratna Senehang Limbu, 62, of Taplejung Municipality-4, according to the police.
American national killed in accident
The 12 injured are receiving treatment at hospitals in Jhapa, Morang and Sunsari districts. The condition of four people, among the injured, is critical, according to the police.
“Most of the patients sustained injuries to their head, chest and leg,” said Kudum Bhattarai, a doctor involved in their treatment.
The pick up (Ga 1 Ja 5728) was carrying passengers more than its capacity of 12, was heading toward district headquarters, Fungling, from Purnedanda of Thechambu. The site of the accident is 7km from district headquarters Fungling.
Meanwhile, DSP Shanti Raj Koirala said an investigation is underway to ascertain the reason behind the accident.
