While 40 inmates sleep in a room suitable for just five, the situation is further compounded by the fact that female inmates are forced to live in the same building as men, which causes various problems, particularly, for women.[break]
“Only five to six people can adjust in a room, but around 40 inmates have to be crammed in due to lack of space,” said the jailor Khagendra Giri.
Though a building was recently constructed at the cost of Rs 8 million to expand the prison space, Giri said, "The flow of inmates has been far more than the capacity of the jail.”
“Recently we shifted 50 women and their children to the new building, but even then the situation has not changed as the number of inmates keeps rising,” Giri added.
The district jail can accomodate only 175 people. But currently, 592 inmates live there. Understandably, the hazards of poor sanitation and other problems faced by the prisoners are beyond words.
