KATHMANDU, June 10: The UCPN (Maoist)-led 30-party opposition alliance has split after the four major parties on Monday reached a 16-point agreement on major contentious issues of the new constitution.

Opposing the agreement, some of the constituent parties in the alliance including Upendra Yadav-led Madhesi People's Right Forum Nepal (MPRF-N), Tarai Madhes Democratic Party (TMDP), Federal Socialist Party (FSP) and Shadbhavana Party held parallel meeting of the alliance on Tuesday. The dissident faction has claimed that as many as 13 constituent parties in the alliance are supporting them. "We have severed our ties with the alliance from Monday as our leadership signed 16-point agreement despite our dissent," said Hridayesh Tripathi vice-chairman of TMLP.Expressing ire over deal reached among major political forces without delineating and naming the provinces, the dissident parties have announced to boycott the Constituent Assembly (CA).

Meanwhile, UCPN (Maoist), Madhesi People's Right Forum Democratic (MPRF-D) and various other parties in the alliance have decided to join the CA from Tuesday. The 30-party alliance had been boycotting the CA after ruling parties' decision to form a questionnaire committee for resolving disputed issues on January 25. "We have decided to join the CA as parties have agreed to adopt consensus approach for constitution writing," said Prem Bahadur Singh, spokesperson for the alliance. The alliance has urged the dissident parties to attend the alliance meeting and put forth their dissenting views there.
