The Metropolitan Police Circle, Maharajgunj said that the fire broke out from the kitchen of the cafe located near the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) at about 10 am. The injured Ranju Humagain, the guest house owner, and Narendra Basnet were rushed to TUTH for treatment. The hospital administration said that the victims suffered minor injuries and are receiving treatment. [break]
"The fire started from the kitchen of the cafe and destroyed everything," said Prabhu Dhakal, deputy superintendent of police (DSP) of the circle. The fire was doused with the joint effort of the police, army men from Bhairabnath Battalion and Armed Police Force personnel. The five storey building belonged to Umesh Shrestha, which was hired by Humagain family to run a guest house and restaurant.
"It took over an hour to control the fire. We had to mobilize two fire engines," Kishor Kumar Bhattarai, chief of Kathmandu Fire Brigade, popularly known as Juddha Barun Yantra, said. He said that the fire started from the kitchen due to gas leak. "The fire blazed after a gas cylinder exploded, followed by two others. But we managed to save other six cylinders," he added.
According to the brigade, over 20 cases of fire were out broke in capital in the last one month and in majority of the cases the causes were gas leak and short circuit.
