DHANGADHI, Jan 20: Fifteen persons were injured and 22 vehicles vandalized Thursday when police used force to open the indefinite Kailali banda called by locals demanding the waiver of debts owed to the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) and an end to load-shedding.

Police have taken eight strike enforcers under control following clashes at different points of the East-West Highway.[break] Markets in Attariya, Tikapur, Lamki and Sukkhad were shut down while transportation was brought to a standstill due to the banda.

The clashes occurred as police tried to escort vehicles through the banda zone.  “We sent around four dozen vehicles stranded at Chisapani,” said chief of Kailali Police Yogeshwar Ramkhami.

Local people were persuaded to invest the NEA provided loan in a rural electrification project, which benefited almost 50,000 households in Kailali and Kanchanpur districts.

The NEA had provided Rs 170 million to 126 cooperatives formed by the local people after the grant provided by the Denmark government fell short for the project.

Local cooperatives agreed to take loans from the NEA fearing that the project would not be completed.

The locals claim they were misled to sign the deal then and the cooperatives cannot pay around Rs 390 million to the NEA over the next 20 years as per the agreement.
